The John Cooper Works Story

MINI vehicles have always been known for their agility and handling, but not necessarily their raw performance. Indeed, MINI models have made their reputation with their handling in curves and tight corners. That said, MINI added a little more spice to its models and made the British brand’s fans very happy when it purchased the John Cooper Works firm in 2007.
But what exactly is John Cooper Works?
Some people think that John Cooper Works is an old company, but in reality, the name has only been around since 2000. That's when Michael Cooper, son of the original MINI Cooper creator John Cooper, came up with the idea to create JCW and specialize in tuning and accessories for MINI vehicles.
Michael Cooper's idea was to preserve all the features that we love about MINI products while giving them more power. The first product developed by John Cooper Works was a package that added 126 horsepower to the MINI Cooper. The system included a new air filter, a modified exhaust system and new settings for the engine computer, among other things.
It wasn't cheap, but the product found many takers in the MINI ownership community. John Cooper Works would go on to create several other products, including the famous 2013 John Cooper Works GP, a car designed for the track and limited to only 2,000 units worldwide.
In 2007, BMW obtained the rights to use the John Cooper Works name, and in 2008 the German automaker purchased the company.
Today, MINI offers a John Cooper Works version of several models including:
- MINI Cooper 3-door
- MINI Cooper Convertible
- MINI Countryman
All are powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 228 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque in the MINI Cooper JCW 3-door and Convertible, and 301 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque in the MINI Countryman JCW.
In addition to their more powerful engines, the John Cooper Works models also include a sportier exhaust system, more aggressive styling and exclusive emblems both inside and out. In other words, the MINI JCW models stand out in performance as well as style.
